Weighted across 2,143,606 occupied homes. The spread inside the state is the point: Stone Mountain is highest on mains at 77%, and Ellijay has the largest propane share at 43%. A state figure describes neither.

The two arrangements, and why the difference is not cosmetic

Of the 118 towns we route in here, 40 are mostly on mains gas, 16 have a substantial propane share, 38 are split between the two and 24 use very little gas of any kind.

On a mains connection, 49 CFR § 192.3 ends the regulated service line at "the outlet of the customer meter or at the connection to a customer’s piping, whichever is further downstream" — so part of the system is the operator’s. On propane there is no service line and no meter boundary, and the whole installation is the property owner’s.

Gas work is separately permitted and separately licensed in most jurisdictions, so ask specifically about gas rather than plumbing in general.
