Weighted across 815,698 occupied homes. The spread inside the state is the point: Fort Mill is highest on mains at 61%, and Carlisle has the largest propane share at 21%. A state figure describes neither.

The two arrangements, and why the difference is not cosmetic

Of the 77 towns we route in here, 7 are mostly on mains gas, 5 have a substantial propane share, 44 are split between the two and 21 use very little gas of any kind.

On a mains connection, 49 CFR § 192.3 ends the regulated service line at "the outlet of the customer meter or at the connection to a customer’s piping, whichever is further downstream" — so part of the system is the operator’s. On propane there is no service line and no meter boundary, and the whole installation is the property owner’s.

Checking a plumber in South Carolina

South Carolina licenses are issued by the South Carolina Residential Builders Commission, Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, which publishes a public search you can use before work begins. South Carolina requires a residential plumber license for work over $500, according to the Commission.

Gas work is separately permitted and separately licensed in most jurisdictions, so ask specifically about gas rather than plumbing in general.
